Description of Culture and Consensus in European Varieties of Capitalism |
This book offers a critique of the varieties of capitalism literature for its neglect of culture when analyzing the role of consensus in the Dutch and German political economies. It demonstrates why culture is an integral part of political economy analysis. It utilizes Antonio Gramsci's work, particularly on "common sense", in an innovative way. It offers new insights into the role of consensus in European varieties of capitalism. It presents extensive interview data from interviews conducted in the Netherlands and Germany.Using two milestones in the Dutch and German political economies - Wassenaar and Alliance for Jobs respectively - this book argues that Antonio Gramsci's 'common sense' provides us with the conceptual apparatus necessary for analysing the integral role played by culture and consensus in the trajectories of national capitalisms in Europe.
